Creating a calming yet beautiful environment within a bedroom can help to improve your overall quality of sleep, yet many people are lost when it comes to styling a room to best suit the season.
When the winter months approach we intrinsically begin the process of hibernating; think warm
fires, cosy rugs, and snuggly blankets. At this time of the year at Roomie HQ we begin what we call ‘turn down’, a process taken from time spent in a hotel in Dubai when our daughter was a baby. The hotel staff would come by each evening and do a ‘turn down’ service – fluffing the pillows, closing the blinds and turning on the lamps.
When we arrived home to NZ we continued the practice in the winter months and continued to call the process ‘turn down’. At dusk, we light the fire, pull the curtains, and turn on specific lights. This instantly creates a winter-worthy home, super snug and cosy, closing off from the world outside.
In the hours before bed we read or watch movies on the sofa layered with soft textured blankets and sheepskins, then head up to bed where the winter layers are continued in bedding and rugs, with a focus on warm and cosy textures.
Setting daily bedtime routines is commonplace in most homes, but we also focus on the change of season, changing our bedding for heavier linen, a winter weight duvet and eventually, as the weather gets colder still, we add a heavier layer with woollen blankets or a velvet comforter.
The colour palette deepens too, with richer warmer colours – taking off the white linen duvet and replacing it with a dark ink charcoal one, all the time contrasting with crisp cotton sheets. Although we have beautiful carpet in our bedrooms, I also like to add a sheepskin next to each side of the bed, so our toes are instantly warm when we get up in the morning.
Routines of quiet reading time with steaming cups of sleepy time tea, set by task lamps rather than bright general lighting create a soft mood before bed, and the loft style of our home means the warmth of the fire fills the bedroom with a cosy heat.
We love snuggling into bed during the winter months. Our Sealy Posturepedic Premium bed is a real shift from our previous slat bed. The plush comfort layers have been a welcome addition, providing the ultimate in comfort. It practically feels like we are sleeping on a cloud, while maintaining support and zero partner disturbance.
