We recently visited the concept store of Wilson & Dorest in Wanaka. Owner Amanda Dorset chatted to us about running a creative business, and how to rethink the tradition living room.
Where do you find your inspiration?: Our designs reflect the raw beauty of the stunning environment we are so lucky to live in, Wanaka. It’s our belief that nature is something that should be part of our life, not something you visit now and then. The objects we chose to surround ourselves with should have substance and meaning. They should be timeless. These days designing with integrity means taking care of the environment we live in. With our sheepskin products, we take what nature has designed so perfectly and apply a little intelligent design and that’s it.
We love your concept store, how did the idea come about? We had just been away for a 2 day strategy workshop talking about the future of the business. Up until then we had opened a few retail accounts around New Zealand and held some local Popup shops in Wanaka with focus of getting our product in to the homes of our friends and families. It just simply grew from people telling their friends about it. We decided the home of the brand needed a place to showcase our designs and philosophy beautifully. The day after our strategy meeting someone called offering a space in town to lease. It was a beautiful space and so we jumped at it. It has been an awesome success for us. We haven’t looked back!
What drives your passion for Wilson &Dorset?: Having the potential to transform how people connect in their living spaces. Creating luxurious sheepskin items that people are going to have in their home for their lifetime.
You would see some beautiful homes through your W&D clients – what do you believe makes a beautiful home? We certainly do, we are very lucky that our clients often share photos with us. A beautiful home to us is about light, colour, texture, it’s about a feeling, a sanctuary for your family. We encourage people to take the time to stand back and think about the furniture they really need in their living space. Shed the excess, and carefully select pieces that have a clear function, feel good and foster connection.
My favourite room in our house is: a stripped back living room. Ditch the big coffee table that sits in the middle of the room, in front of the couch and gathers dust. Do you really need two large heavy , static, space encroaching armchairs? Ditch one, be crazy and ditch both. Wow you have completely opened your living space. Enter a Wilson and Dorset sheepskin Lounge rug you can actually lounge on, support your back using our comfy sheepskin stone set and kick back on a luscious sheepskin Shaggy Bag. These x3 pieces will totally transform how you engage in your living room. And even better they can roam from one room to the next – wherever they are needed, with ease.
Our product can be found: In our Concept Lounge, 53 Helwick Street Wanaka and some selected retailers around NZ
