We had so much fun making over our spare room, that we began eyeing up a few other spaces around the house that have been a little neglected and overlooked. We are guessing that there are a few outdoor spaces looking as sad as our deck, after a long NZ winter.
Of course there was the initial design, planning along the way, and a spit and polish all round – great to get out in the sun and have a sparkling, usable space – and we are happy to report that it has been getting plenty of love these past few sunny weekends.
From start to finish, mostly pottering over weekend, and leaving the planning during the week, we gave this space some love over the last month. Those who have been following us on instagram #roomieoutdoors – thankyou for your patience!
Seating: We moved the bulky picnic table and benches to another outdoor space and went for a streamlined cantilevered bar area, which overlooks the garden. At the other end of the deck we have a full outdoor dining area, so this is a great additional seating area that doesn’t clutter the space. Nothing fancy – we attached industrial brackets from Mitre 10 to the existing balustrade and topped it with long run battens. Instant bar leaner! It’s had plenty of use at the end of a long day in the garden and is nicely shaded with our giant punga. The kids love sitting here for dinner too.
Trellis: Oh yawn, how sick are we of boring trellis? So… clever (clever) hubby designed a bespoke trellis with a pattern we have been throwing around at Roomie HQ. A little homage to our beautiful Aotearoa. The old trellis was removed, and with new beading and a little blood sweat and tears – Voila! Super pretty with the sunlight shining through.
Bar Stools: Argh! – how beautiful is Mamasita’s new summer range, hot off the press and such a nice twist on the original Acapulco chair. Turquoise is the new black, and these stools are the perfect height for our bar leaner.
Occasional Chair: We picked this up last year at Citta Design’s outlet store in Mt Eden, one of those chairs you just want to sit in all afternoon with a GnT and a good book. This sheltered spot is perfect and sheltered, and gets the afternoon sun. Similar ones can be found at Flutter Design
Coffee Table: Impossible to have such a fabulous chair and not add a coffee table/ottoman. Another favourite from Mamasita, it may have to live in my lounge next winter!
Foliage: We grabbed a little greenery from Mitre 10’s new garden centre in New Lynn, which helps soften the space.
A few favourite accessories from around the house – a decent serving tray from Iko Iko never goes a miss for cocktail hour, and some serious reading (looking) with Sibella’s Nomad
