We reported a few weeks ago about the impending Room Range at Cotton-On Kids, and with much fan-fare and social media madness, it landed at their online store last Monday, then at the NZ outpost – St Lukes – yesterday.
The Room Range is consise, and marketed as whimsical, modern decor, with mix and match options, and thankfully limited to monochrome pieces, fun brights, and soft pastals.
The quality is nothing earth shattering, as expected for the price point. If you like the style, we would recommend picking up a few cute pieces for a modern update, but looking elsewhere to invest in more durable bedding – especially items like fitted sheets and pillowcases.
We were disappointed with the too-close-for-comfort similarities with bespoke textile companies, especially within existing ranges from Fictional Objects, LeeAnn Yare and Rachel Castle. Hopefully, Cotton-On will carefully consider the next range, and perhaps work alongside established designers, like so many department stores have been doing. (Trellis for Ezibuy, Karen for Myer, etc).
So our final verdict: Cute, whimsical bedding and accessories, but let’s not buy everything in the range and end up with a catalogue copy. Purchase a few favourite pieces, and complete the room with bespoke items, quality basics, and vintage finds. We have put together a couple of mood boards using a few of our favourites from the range, keeping the rooms personal, and anti-catalogue!
