You may have come across Helen Banker’s work recently on the cover of Your Home and Garden magazine featuring her botanical collaboration with NZ wallpaper company Back to the Wall. We love seeing collaboration’s by companies which support local creatives, so we caught up with Helen to see what makes her tick.
How did the collaboration with Back To The Wall come about?
I was on the hunt for a company that produced wallpaper & murals in NZ + fine art prints – I had started creating a range of botanical imagery that I needed to get out into the world.
When I searched for producers in Auckland Back to the Wall came up. I realised that I had worked with both Relda & Jo fifteen years prior – when I was on a 6 month contract assisting Anne Geddes. At that time Jo was the retoucher for Anne & Relda was in charge of print production.
When Relda & Jo saw my images they immediately asked if I would consider being a contributing artist. A very exciting collaboration.
What is the process to get the images to such an oversized scale?
Huge working digital files!
What inspires and motivates your work?
An essential craving and need for creating a piece of art to be enjoyed or reacted too. The love of Colour, texture, and detail within the natural world – this inspires me.
Painters such as Frida Kahlo & Georgia O’Keeffe. And florists such as Saskia Havekes of Grandiflora.
What is your favourite room in your home?
My dining room, because it is a social hub for my family. It has the most amazing natural daylight and creates a wonderful landscape for my images! It overlooks my garden and it shows me that life is constant change!
