After the popularity of the paper plane design in our last bedlinen collection I drew on this inspiration of the simple line artwork. The Dreaming of Horses and Stars was 100% inspired by my daughter and her love of horses, and the other two are drawn from classic childhood stories and songs. I love that both the Woodland and Jungle prints incorporate many different animals as children will find one or two they love and get excited. We have also followed on with the concept of our last years Painted Series bed linen using a painterly sketchy graphic on the reverse of the duvets. These can also be bought as sheets and pillowcases to mix up the look, and now after popular demand we make sheets in King single size and also Double. We have brought in some colour to this collection with our quilted throws and baby swaddles. These colours have been super popular so far so I can’t imagine they will last too long. (we have ordered more of the organic cotton stretchy jersey fabric as these were snapped up really fast by our retailers) The entire collection is proudly made in NZ.
Tell us a little about the journey for your business so far:
We have been trading for just over two years and I feel like we have come a really long way. We used to hand screen print all our muslin wraps in our studio which soon became too much to keep up with the demand so we began outsourcing this which freed up lots more time to grow in other areas. As a new and small business we are always restrained by cash-flow like many others, so even though we have many ideas and products we want to try in the market place we just sometimes have to put some aside. As we are getting a larger customer base we are selling more which is starting to open the doors for new and more intricate designs ideas, as minimum order quantities don’t seem so out of reach now. Burrow and Be is only going to get better, so watch this space.
Where do you find your inspiration?:
My kids are probably my biggest inspiration, but with the modern parent always in the back of my mind. I try to create designs that the kids will love but also look great in a home, making it a win-win situation. I have always had a bit of a Scandinavian influence, with my father having a love for mid century design, so Burrow and Be has always had minimal design style and colour. (however this may change with time!). Children’s books, textile design and the process of printing have all influenced my designs over the years. Sometimes I have a great design idea but the logistics of actually doing it is far beyond my means so I pair it back to make it work. In terms of actual products rather than design, I listen to my customers needs and wants, do things I want for my kids and again stash a bunch of ideas for later down the track.
What drives your passion for Burrow and Be?:
I just love what I do, I have always had a passion for repetition for some reason so fabric design and screen printing was right up my alley. I love marketing and growing the business so its actually really hard for me to take on help as I find myself always wanting to be in total control. I love the fact that if I have an idea and then make it happen. For example, last year my daughter had an obsession with horses and ponies, so I created the “Dreaming of Horses and Stars collection” (typically by the time the whole range was ready to release her new obsession was mermaids, but I’m sure there are many other girls that still have the horse obsession so hopefully this collection will bring some happiness to them.)
Well you would think it should be the bedrooms but in fact its my dining room / lounge. Our house is not big but this space is north facing which opens and looks out to our big back yard so has a nice spacious feeling. I also have lots of indoor plants and a few nice retro pieces of furniture (obviously take after my father)
Your product can be found:
We have quite a few stockists now, both bricks and mortar stores and online (these can be found on the stockists page of our website), we also sell our products on our website www.burrowandbe.co.nz
We have a few things up our sleeves, we are working on some new muslin designs which is possibly another collab project with a talented friend. This might be a bridge between our current collections and the next ones as we always like to have a bit of flow from one thing to the next. I’m also thinking our next collection will include more colour, our coloured quilts and swaddles have been received really well. So we may venture out a bit more down this road, but you will just need to stay tuned and watch our journey as it evolves
